A biomechanical assessment is a physiotherapy evaluation of how your body manages movement and load during activities that are relevant to you.

It may include observation of walking, running, squatting, stepping, lifting or a sport-specific task, alongside assessment of strength, mobility, balance and control. These findings are considered with your symptoms, history and recent activity rather than used to label your body as misaligned.

The assessment does not provide a certain diagnosis or predict a future injury by itself. Its purpose is to identify useful patterns, capacities or activity factors that can inform practical rehabilitation, exercise guidance or decisions about whether another clinical opinion is needed.

What is a biomechanical assessment?

It is a physiotherapy assessment exploring movement, physical capacity and activity demands in relation to symptoms or goals. Observation is combined with history and clinical testing rather than used as a stand-alone diagnosis.

Is a biomechanical assessment only for runners?

No. It may be useful for walking, gym activity, sport, work tasks or another movement linked with your concerns. The assessment is selected around the activity that is relevant to you.

What movements might be assessed?

Depending on your needs, the physiotherapist may observe walking, running, squatting, stepping, lifting, balance or a sport-specific task. Only movements that are appropriate, safe and useful for the assessment are selected.

Do I need to bring my sports shoes or equipment?

Bring the footwear you normally use for the relevant activity and any small, practical item requested before the appointment. Large equipment is not usually necessary, and the clinic can advise what would be useful.

Will the assessment identify the exact cause of my pain?

Not necessarily. Pain is influenced by several factors, and one movement pattern rarely provides a complete explanation. The assessment aims to identify relevant findings and practical options while acknowledging uncertainty.

What happens after the assessment?

Findings are explained and used to agree an action plan. This may include rehabilitation exercises, activity or load guidance, review appointments, or a recommendation to seek another clinical opinion when appropriate.
