UNDERSTANDING MSK CARE
Understanding MSK physiotherapy
MSK means musculoskeletal: the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and related structures that support movement.
An MSK assessment looks beyond the place that feels painful. It may consider movement, strength, flexibility, recent changes in activity or workload, and the daily tasks that have become difficult. This helps connect your symptoms with function without assuming every problem has one simple cause.
Your physiotherapy plan is shaped around practical goals such as walking, working, exercising or rebuilding confidence after injury. The problems below are commonly assessed, but an appointment is needed to decide whether physiotherapy is appropriate for your circumstances.
ASSESSMENT AND REHABILITATION
Assessment and treatment shaped around you
Your first appointment begins with a conversation about your symptoms, health history, priorities and the activities affected. The physical assessment is adapted to the issue and may look at movement, strength, flexibility, balance or a task connected with everyday life, work or sport.
Findings are explained in clear language, including any uncertainty or reason to seek another healthcare opinion. You and your physiotherapist can then agree realistic goals and a plan that reflects your preferences, current capacity and response over time.
Education and practical advice
Clear guidance may cover pacing, activity changes, recovery habits and ways to remain active without unnecessarily avoiding movement.
Exercise rehabilitation
Exercises are selected for your goals and progressed according to your response rather than following a fixed routine.
Manual therapy where appropriate
Hands-on techniques may support the wider plan, but are not presented as the only answer to an MSK problem.
Strength, mobility and load management
Rehabilitation can gradually build movement, strength and tolerance to the activities that matter to you.
The later stages may prepare you for household tasks, work demands, sport or exercise, with progressions chosen for the function you want to regain.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
MSK physiotherapy questions
Practical information before arranging an assessment.
What does MSK physiotherapy treat?
MSK physiotherapy assesses problems involving muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and movement. This can include back or neck pain, joint stiffness, strains, overuse problems and rehabilitation after injury or surgery. An assessment helps determine whether physiotherapy is suitable for your circumstances.
Do I need a GP referral to see a physiotherapist?
Many people can arrange a private physiotherapy appointment without a GP referral. Requirements can differ if you are using private medical insurance or have particular health circumstances, so check with your insurer or healthcare provider before booking if you are unsure.
What should I wear to an MSK physiotherapy appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move and, where appropriate, lets the physiotherapist examine the relevant area. Shorts may help for a hip, knee or lower-limb assessment. Your comfort and dignity should be respected throughout the appointment.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
There is no reliable session number before assessment. The appropriate frequency and duration depend on the problem, your goals, how long symptoms have been present and how you respond. Progress is reviewed so appointments can be adapted rather than booked as a fixed course.
Can physiotherapy help with long-term pain?
Physiotherapy may help some people understand persistent symptoms, improve movement confidence and build capacity for valued activities. The approach is individual and does not promise to remove pain completely. New, severe or concerning symptoms should be assessed through an appropriate urgent or medical service.
Are home visits available in Solihull or Birmingham?
Home visits may be available across parts of Solihull and Birmingham, depending on location, clinical need and scheduling. Contact ACR Physiotherapy with your postcode and a short explanation of your needs so the team can confirm whether a home appointment is practical.
