MUSCULAR COMFORT AND RECOVERY

Understanding sports massage

Sports massage is a hands-on service that can be tailored to muscular tightness, post-training soreness, general fatigue or preparation around regular activity.

The appointment begins with your activity, current symptoms and the areas you would like treated. Techniques and pressure are chosen according to comfort rather than the idea that harder treatment is automatically more effective. Sports massage does not diagnose injury or treat medical disease.

Massage may support short-term comfort and recovery, but it does not replace active rehabilitation when strength, movement or function needs to be rebuilt. If symptoms suggest that a physiotherapy assessment or another healthcare opinion is more appropriate, this can be discussed.

TAILORED HANDS-ON CARE

Assessment and treatment shaped around you

Before treatment, you can explain your activity, symptoms, recent training and the areas you want the appointment to focus on. The clinician may ask simple questions about injury, health conditions or sensitivity to check whether massage appears appropriate.

You and the clinician agree the focus areas, position and pressure before treatment begins. Feedback is encouraged throughout, and techniques can be adjusted or stopped if they do not feel suitable.

Discussing your activity and symptoms

Training, work demands, current soreness and your reason for booking help guide the session.

Selecting appropriate massage techniques

Hands-on techniques are chosen for the agreed areas without making unsupported claims about wider health effects.

Pressure adapted to your comfort

Treatment does not need to be severely painful, and pressure can be changed at any time.

Advice for recovery and ongoing activity

Simple guidance may cover activity, hydration, rest or whether physiotherapy assessment should be considered.

The session closes with a brief review of comfort and next steps. Repeated massage is not presented as a substitute for assessment or exercise rehabilitation when a continuing problem affects function.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Sports massage questions

Practical information before arranging an assessment.

Is sports massage only for athletes?

No. It can be considered by active adults, recreational exercisers and people managing muscular tightness or fatigue around work and activity. Suitability depends on your symptoms, health circumstances and goals rather than competitive level.

What should I wear for a sports massage appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing and bring shorts if the legs are being treated. The clinician will explain positioning and draping so only the agreed area is accessible while your privacy and comfort are maintained.

Is sports massage supposed to be painful?

No. Some techniques may feel firm, but treatment should remain tolerable and pressure can be adjusted. Severe pain is not required for massage to be worthwhile, and you should give feedback throughout.

How long does a sports massage session last?

Session length depends on the appointment option booked and the areas being treated. The clinic can confirm available durations before booking so an appropriate amount of time can be selected.

Can sports massage help after exercise?

It may support short-term muscular comfort or relaxation after exercise for some people. It does not guarantee faster recovery and should sit alongside appropriate rest, nutrition, activity management and rehabilitation where needed.

Should I book physiotherapy or sports massage?

Physiotherapy may be more appropriate when pain follows injury, function is reduced, symptoms keep returning or you need assessment and rehabilitation. Sports massage may suit muscular tightness or recovery needs without a clear injury concern.
