SPORTS INJURY AND PERFORMANCE

Understanding sports physiotherapy

Sports physiotherapy applies musculoskeletal assessment and rehabilitation to the movements, training loads and physical demands associated with exercise and sport.

You do not need to compete at a high level to benefit. An assessment may be useful when pain, weakness, stiffness or reduced confidence is limiting running, gym training, team sport or another activity. It considers the injured area alongside movement, strength, training history and the tasks you want to resume.

The goal is not to promise a rapid return. It is to build a clear, progressive plan that reflects tissue recovery, your response to exercise and the demands of your chosen activity. The examples below are commonly assessed, although suitability and priorities are decided individually.

SPORTS ASSESSMENT AND REHABILITATION

Assessment and treatment shaped around you

Your appointment begins with the history of the problem, recent training changes and the movements that are currently limited. The assessment may look at mobility, strength, control, balance or a task connected with running, lifting, changing direction or your particular sport.

Findings are explained in practical language. You and your physiotherapist can agree early priorities, how activity may be modified and which measures will help track progress without relying on a fixed recovery timetable.

Injury and movement assessment

Movement and loading tasks help connect your symptoms with the demands of training, exercise and everyday activity.

Progressive exercise rehabilitation

Exercises develop from manageable starting points towards the strength, control and confidence needed for your goals.

Strength and load management

Training load, recovery and physical capacity are reviewed so progressions remain useful and proportionate.

Return-to-sport planning

Later rehabilitation may include running, lifting, jumping or sport-specific tasks introduced according to your response.

The plan may include education, exercise and hands-on treatment where appropriate, with decisions reviewed as your symptoms, capacity and sporting demands change.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Sports physiotherapy questions

Practical information before arranging an assessment.

What is sports physiotherapy?

Sports physiotherapy assesses and rehabilitates injuries or movement problems connected with exercise and sport. It can combine advice, progressive exercise, load management and hands-on treatment where appropriate, with the plan shaped around the activity and level you want to return to.

Do I need to be an athlete to see a sports physiotherapist?

No. Sports physiotherapy can support recreational runners, gym users, active adults and people returning to exercise as well as competitive athletes. The important factors are your symptoms, current ability and the physical demands you want to manage.

When should I seek physiotherapy after a sports injury?

An assessment may be useful when pain, swelling, weakness or loss of function is limiting activity or not settling as expected. Severe pain, obvious deformity, inability to bear weight or other urgent symptoms should be assessed through an appropriate medical service.

Can sports physiotherapy help me return to running or the gym?

Physiotherapy may help you rebuild strength, movement tolerance and confidence for running or gym activity. Progressions depend on the injury, your starting point and response, so return plans are individual rather than based on one standard programme.

How long does sports injury rehabilitation take?

There is no reliable timeframe without assessment. Recovery varies with the type and severity of injury, how long symptoms have been present, training demands and individual response. Progress reviews help guide when exercises and activity can be advanced.

Are home visits available for sports rehabilitation?

Home visits may be considered across parts of Solihull and Birmingham when location, clinical need and availability allow. Some later-stage sports tasks may be better assessed at the Shirley clinic or in a suitable exercise environment.
